The number of traffic injuries and deaths in a region, expressed as a rate per 10,000 residents.
Why is this important?
Traffic injuries and fatalities present an enormous cost to a community in terms of both money spent and lives altered.
How is our county doing?
In 2014, Essex County had a traffic injury and death rate of 2.7 per 10,000 residents, a steady rate since 2012 and a 37% decrease in the rate from 2004. The rate in Essex County was also lower than the state rate of 3.0 per 10,000 residents in 2014 and much lower than the national rate of 12.
How do we compare to similar counties?
The rate in Essex County was slightly higher than Middlesex (2.4 per 10,000 residents) in 2014, but lower than both Westchester, NY (5.4) and Lake, IL (6.2). Each county has had a decrease in rate since 2004.
