Arts and Culture Participation
What does this measure?
The overall rate of cultural participation, where 1 means that adults in a region on average participate in one type of cultural activity per year (of seven categories of cultural activities). A higher score indicates more participation in arts and cultural activities.
Why is this important?
Participation in arts and cultural activities increases the depth of character within a community and can reflect where a community stands culturally, educationally and economically.
How is our county doing?
In 2012-14, Essex County had a cultural participation rate of 1.69, an increase from 1.50 in 2009-11.
How do we compare to similar counties?
Essex County had the lowest cultural participation rate of the comparison areas in 2012-14, as Lake, IL had a rate of 1.74, while Middlesex, MA and Westchester, NY were at 1.87 and 2.01, respectively. Essex County increased by more than the comparison counties since 2009-11.
